Chapter Eight

Misha woke up slowly, which was new. Usually, when he woke up these days, it was to Tommy crying. He was used to throwing himself out of bed so his son wouldn’t wake half the house, but right now, he couldn’t hear Tommy.

He blinked his eyes open. The fact that he couldn’t hear his son wasn’t the only strange thing. Was that sunlight streaming in the window? It wasn’t possible. Tommy didn’t sleep more than three or four hours when Misha was lucky, and it hadn’t been often.

Misha sat up, and the sight of his bedroom reminded him of what happened yesterday. The candles had been blown out, and the TV was off. There were no signs of the popcorn or the drinks Marlow had gotten for him. And while the pillows and blankets were still on the bed, Marlow was nowhere to be seen.

When Misha peeked into the crib, he realized that neither was Tommy.

The door opened before he could freak out. Marlow peeked in, and when he saw Misha was awake, he grinned and pushed the door fully open with his elbow. Misha’s eyes widened when he saw the state Marlow was in.

He was still wearing the sweatpants and t-shirt he’d put on yesterday for the movie, and it was evident by the state of his hair that he hadn’t showered yet. He looked adorably sleepy, which wasn’t an adjective Misha would normally think of when he thought of Marlow.

What was even more adorable was the fact that Marlow was wearing Tommy against his chest in a sling. The baby was waving his hands, but he wasn’t crying. When Misha was able to see his face, he looked more than happy to be where he was.

Then there was the tray Marlow was holding.

“Good morning,” Marlow said.

Misha settled deeper against the pillows at his back. “Good morning. What’s going on here?”

Marlow grinned and put the tray on the nightstand closer to Misha. The candles that had been there yesterday were gone, so Marlow had been planning this. The fact that all of Misha’s favorite breakfast foods were on the tray pointed to that, too.

“How did you sleep?” Marlow asked instead of answering.

“I think this is the best night I’ve had since, well, I can’t remember. Probably since I had to move out of my parents’ house.” He hadn’t even had a nightmare, which was a small miracle.

Marlow nodded, looking satisfied. “Good. You needed it.”

“I did. But who looked after Tommy?”

Marlow peered down at the baby and grinned when Tommy tried to catch his finger. “I did.”

Misha took a piece of toast from the plate on the tray and bit into it. It was buttered and still warm, and he groaned in pleasure.

When he looked at Marlow again, the man was staring at his mouth. Misha’s cheeks heated, and he turned his attention back to his son. “Did you spend the entire night with him?”

“I did. Gallagher helped me set up my bed so Tommy could sleep in it with me.
